Rachel is a determined Jewish sophomore student and the daughter of an inter-racial same-sex couple. She joins the glee club hoping that fame will increase her popularity and help her find a boyfriend. She is bullied by members of the school cheer-leading and football teams, but is pleased when quarterback Finn Hudson joins the club, developing a crush on him. The two share a kiss, although he tells her to forget it happened and goes back to his girlfriend, cheerleader Quinn Fabray. Rachel quits the glee club when director Will Schuester assigns a solo performance she wanted for herself to another student. She is awarded the lead role in the school musical, Cabaret, by Sue Sylvester and Sandy Ryerson, who are conspiring to bring the glee club down. Rachel later rejoins the glee club when she realizes she would rather be in a group where she has friends. She has a brief relationship with Puck, a member of the glee club and football player who used to bully her. Rachel ultimately breaks up with him over her feelings for Finn, but they remain on good terms and he stops picking on her. Finn believes himself to be the father of Quinn's unborn baby, until Rachel discovers the father is actually Puck and tells Finn the truth. The club attend their first major competition, where Rachel gives an impromptu solo performance and they win by unanimous decision. Rachel starts dating Finn, but Finn breaks up with her. Rachel meets Jesse St. James, the lead male singer in Vocal Adrenaline, at a music store, and after an impromptu performance, Jesse asks Rachel out. Finn wants Rachel and him to get back together, but Rachel refuses, as she has fallen for Jesse. The club wants Rachel to break it off with Jesse because he is in Vocal Adrenaline. She pretends to break it off, and she and Jesse kiss. The Vocal Adrenaline coach, watches them kiss and Jesse sees her. This implies that it really is just a set up. Jesse is pressuring Rachel to have sex with him and she refuses, not being ready. Jesse gets mad but later apologizes, telling her he will wait until she is ready. She announces that she is ready. Meanwhile, her ex-boyfriend, Finn, is about to lose his virginity to Santana. Rachel is unable to have sex with Jesse, but Finn has sex with Santana, but thinks it means nothing. Later, Jesse transfers to McKinley and joins New Directions, allowing Jesse and Rachel to go public with their relationship. The rest of the club finds this unfair and are suspicious of Jesse's true motives. Finn tells Jesse that he will do his best to stay away from Rachel.
